With warmer temps in Acton & the Boston West burbs, it's time to get your car ready for spring and summer holiday travel! Tires are an important piece of safety equipment on your vehicle - tires (and brakes) are what is between you and the road! Sal's Auto Repair can help you choose the right tires for you, your vehicle, budget and driving conditions.

Check out Sal's Auto Repair Acton Tire Buying, Seasonal Car Maintenance Safety Tips & Specials:

  1. Check Tires for proper inflation. Tire pressure increases in the hot weather (Tires lose pressure in the Cold weather). Lower tire pressure can reduce your vehicle’s traction especially on wet roads AND reduce your gas mileage (thanks for the comment!).

**Tip from Jean & Sal – Check proper Tire PSI inflation in your car manual or on the inside door panel (not on PSI on the side of the tire!).

  2. Regular Tire Rotation helps with even tread wear and extend your Tire life. Sal’s recommends rotating your tires about every 6,000 miles (+/- depending on patterns –rule of thumb – Rotate tires every other oil change – See Sal’s FREE Lifetime Tire Rotation Special)

  3. Put New Tires on the back of the vehicle for better traction in Snow and wet road conditions (tip courtesy of Michelin Tire Safety Expert who says "If you lose traction in the rear first, the car's gonna spin. Physics always wins.")

Is your Tire Pressure Symbol ON or think you may need New Tires? Sal’s offers a Complimentary 60 point Vehicle Inspection and Safety Check with any service. Take advantage of Sal's Auto 2018 Car Care Maintenance Service Specials and FREE Lifetime Tire Rotation with Purchase of 4 New Tires from Sal’s Auto & Truck Repair--- Offer valid with purchase of Oil Change or Any Auto Service.(1 coupon per visit please).

At Sal’s Auto, experience tells us regular car and tire maintenance can save you money (avoiding costly car repairs down the road) and help keep your vehicle safe, reliable & efficient every season.

It would also be worthwhile to mention that low tire pressure results in poorer fuel economy in addition to compromising vehicle grip in ice and snow.

Thanks for the reminder to check my cars tire pressure this winter. I always forget to do that little thing and I know how big of a difference it can make. Everything from the wear of the treat to the amount of grip you have on slippery roads. I will get that done as soon as possible.

Thanks for the tips, I always hated driving in the snow. We've been in need of some new tired recently, so we're thinking of buying some. I personally want to make our last much longer, but my wife thinks otherwise. Maybe this will help her change her mind. It's usually better to just work with what you've got in the first place.

Does swapping out the rear set of tires for better traction in snow and wet conditions still apply when you have a vehicle with front-wheel drive? From what I understand, it's a lot more difficult for that type of vehicle to fishtail. It'd be nice to know this for the next winter.

The auto industry standard is to put the best tires on the rear (even for FWD vehicles) but we recommend 4 good traction tires for best handling in the rain or snow (remember our record Boston winter!). Call Sal's Auto in Acton MA / Metrowest Boston MA at 978-263-2614 if you are local & we can inspect your tires for any season. I am glad that I read this article about how to keep an eye out on your car's tires. I need to do better at knowing what PSI my tires need to be. So my tires do a better job in the winter and get more traction.

I recently just got a truck and am worried about how it will handle in wet conditions. I'm definitely going to take your advice and put my newer tires on the back of the truck. I'll also have to see a mechanic about rotating my tires. Thanks for the help in taking care of my truck!

Hey, thanks for this post. Do you know if you can adjust car insurance rates based on how well you prepare your vehicle for winter? Like, could I renegotiate the price if I get new all-weather tires? I would be doing it anyway, but if I can get a kickback from the insurance company that would be a nice bonus.

When we are talk about tire maintenance it means you are extending the life of your tires. Check the tire pressure. If your tire condition is not good and you can see many damages like holes and craks you should replace the tire immediately. If your car extended warranty comes to an end you should take extended car warranty like Toco Warranty because extended warranty plays an important role to protect our vehicles.

Cold temperature is not good for your tires because cold temperature reduces air pressure in tires. Make sure your tires are properly inflated as they will help to enhance fuel economy and extend the life of the tires. Also, be sure to have the tread wear inspected.

Check tires for proper inflation in chilly and winter season. Tire tend to loose it pressure in winter. Lower tire pressure can lead into reduce gas mileage. Regular tire rotation helps with even wear and extend the tire life. Also do practice new tires back of the vehicle for better traction in snow and chilly season. By doing above important tips I am sure you have checked proper PSI inflation in your car manual. Thanks a really vehicle reminder notification. I love to practice all these steps since I do travel in cold and winter season. Thanks a lot for the worth a try tips.

Thank you for providing such informative posts about cars at a regular interval. You have described about how and why we should maintain our car tire pressure during winter. The thing about tire is that tire pressure varies with the fluctuation of surrounding temperature. During winter season the car pressure decreases due to decrease in temperature. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration there are about 600 fatalities and about 33,000 injuries occurs in a year for the use of under-inflated tires. And we also waste about one billion gallons of gasoline by using under-inflated tires. And also the under-inflated tires produces less friction on snowy surface. So we should maintain our tire pressure at a optimum level.

I liked that you had mentioned that when buying new tires that it can be important to put them on the back to receive better traction in the snow. My wife's tires don't have that much tread left and I'm wanting to get new tires for her so that I don't have to worry about her sliding around. I'll have to start looking around for tires and once I find some I'll be sure to put them on the back so that I know she'll be driving safely this winter.

It is a really useful post. Extreme temperatures affects the car most than that of other seasons. During winter season the temperature could hit the lowest range of temperature and hence cars are more prone to damage during this season. With the decrease in temperature, the tire pressure decreases and hence should be constantly checked and make sure that your tire is not under-inflated. Another thing is that we should use winter tire rather than that of ordinary tire, as they produce more traction on the snowy surfaces than that of ordinary tires. And tires should be rotate at a regular interval. Pleased to know about your tire rotation offer. Thank you.

Tire is an important piece of safety equipment on every type of vehicle. As a car cant roll on without tire. Hence special care should be given to tire in any season. But in winter season there is most chances of tire get inflated. Check your tires for proper inflation in the winter. As tires loses it pressure in the cold weather. Lower tire pressure can minimal your vehicle’s traction especially on snowy or wet roads which can leads to reduce your gas mileage. So take a proper care of tires and other parts before winter arrives.

Winter is harsh for cars. In the winter season, the roads are generally covered with snow. So it is difficult for the drivers to drive in the snowy surface. So it highly recommended to use winter tires during this period as these tires produce better traction on the snowy road surface. Due to fluctuation in surrounding temperature tire pressure generally changes. So we should check the tire pressure at this time. Tires must be properly inflated. Because over or under inflated tires may cause harm to the tires & affects the fuel efficiency in a negative way. Tires must be rotated at certain time interval and also balanced.

Thanks for explaining that tires and brakes are very important parts of your vehicle because they're what's between you and the road. I haven't had my tires or brakes looked at in quite a while because I haven't noticed any obvious problems. Now that you've reminded me of their importance, I think I'll have them checked soon just to make sure everything's safe.

Oh, good to know that tires lose pressure in cold weather. I've been having some slight traction issues on the road, so that might be it. I'll probably take my car into a repair shop to get the tires checked out, among other things.
